Post Description

Acoustic folk, drone, fiddle, singer-songwriter, strings, traditional, Scotland.

Zeer, zeer de moeite van het beluisteren waard!!!

From the Floorboards is an album shaped by history, the sea, and a set of extraordinary instruments.

Written to mark 125 years since Sir Ernest Shackleton set sail aboard Discovery with Captain Scott, the album draws on a personal connection as I am a distant relative of Shackleton, and a desire to explore what remains of those polar journeys in sound. Central to the project is the Shackleton Violin, built by conservationist and luthier Steve Burnett from the original floorboards of Shackleton’s former Edinburgh home. Conceived as a time capsule in honour of polar explorers, and as a voice from, and for our struggling seas.

The album also features two sister instruments by Steve Burnett. The Il Mare violin and the Orca viola - each sharing a piece of driftwood with the Shackleton Violin, three voices bound together by the sea.

All of the music was composed during two residencies in Scotland, immersed in coastal landscapes and tidal rhythms. Original compositions sit alongside songs written by Shackleton and his crewmates during the expeditions, including music composed aboard the Morning relief mission after Discovery became trapped in the ice. These historical songs sit easily beside my own writing, their directness and humanity resonating across time.

Recorded both aboard the historic RRS Discovery in Dundee and in the studio, and produced by Sam Kelly and Aaren Bennett.

From the Floorboards is a journey through icy seas, eroding coastlines, and intimate marine worlds an album that listens closely to the past while speaking quietly to the fragile present.

“I hope that this recording provides 'Vital Mental Medicine”.
