Rating .............: 8.1/10
Genre ..............: Animation | Family | Drama
Studio .............: TVC London / TVS for Channel 4
Language ...........: English
Year ...............: 1989
Runtime ............: 25 min 29 s
Source .............: VHSRip 698x562 (x264, HANDJOB)
Video ..............: 1920x1440 (4:3)
Codec ..............: H.265 (HEVC) Main 10 / 10-bit
Audio ..............: AAC LC (Stereo, 192 kbps)
About this restoration:
The source is a VHS rip encoded at 698x562, well below the
film's original broadcast quality. It was put through four
AI/grading passes and re-encoded to bring it up to a clean
1440p presentation while preserving the original 4:3 frame
and the soft, hand-drawn crayon look of the film.
Pass 1 .............: Starlight Mini
Noise reduction and image restoration
applied to the source VHS rip, cleaning
up tape grain and analogue artifacts
ahead of upscaling.
Pass 2 .............: Gaia 2 - Upscale to 1440p
AI-based upscaling from the 698x562
VHS source to 1920x1440, preserving the
original 4:3 aspect ratio.
Pass 3 .............: Flicker Removal & Frame Stabilization
VHS-era flicker and frame jitter removed
and frames steadied for a smooth, stable
picture without introducing artificial
motion.
Pass 4 .............: Color Grading (.cube LUT)
Manual grade exported as a .cube LUT
and applied during the encode in 10-bit,
correcting VHS color drift and restoring
the film's original crayon-warm palette
without introducing banding.
Pass 5 .............: H.265 Encoding (NVENC)
Encoded to H.265/HEVC (Main 10, 10-bit)
with hevc_nvenc at ~9188 kb/s average
(13.0 Mb/s peak).
Color space: BT.709 (TV range)
Audio: source FLAC (lossless) re-encoded
to AAC LC, 192 kbps, 48 kHz stereo.
The result keeps the gentle crayon-drawn textures and warmth
of the original VHS release, now sharper, steadier and free of
tape noise - without losing the hand-drawn soul of the film.
